Atos claims top slot in Europe for its technology, basing this on its work in AI, IoT and quantum computing simulation
As CEO Thierry Bretton (pictured) says, it has money in the bank, no debt, and is looking for the next acquisition. “Our vision is to help our customers to grow, and to develop pure quantum computing in a few years’ time. We are not just a services company, we are a digital company. We are the only one with so many partners, spending €7m on pure R&D, and with 5000 critical patents.”
So where is it in world rankings, IT Europa asked him?
“In hardware cloud we are in the top three, perhaps the top two, in cybersecurity services we are in the top five, in HPC we are in the top three/four. In data management top three/four.”
“The US is our first market, but we need to enhance it. We can continue to grow and we need to, to organise against our competitors in the US and Asia. We are very strong in the UK with a good team, and we play an important role in the European ecosystem, but not just Europe.”
It has also succeeded in attracting €120m of investment from the EU to work as co-ordinator on a specialist processor (EPI) with 22 other partners. The first chip prototype is due in 2020 and he sees a convergence in HPC, processor and quantum business.
Its major focus in 2018 and theme of its technology day in Paris is AI. “Three conditions must be met for companies to fully embrace it. First, they need to identify the situations and use cases where AI makes the most sense and brings the greatest value. Second, they need to have access to the computing power that can process and explore these massive amounts of data; lastly, they need to be sure that they can manage their data securely.”
“Atos is uniquely positioned to support companies with these three challenges and therefor help them understand, use and leverage artificial intelligence,” he concludes.
