Databricks buys 8080 Labs to expand its low-code offerings

Databricks has acquired German startup 8080 Labs, the creators behind bamboolib, a UI-based data science tool, for an undisclosed sum.

As part of the deal, Databricks plans to integrate 8080 Labs UI-driven features directly into its Lakehouse Platform, expanding the company's low-code/no-code offerings.

The strategic acquisition will allow a broader audience to gain access to Lakehouse, further democratization of data and AI across the enterprise.

The data and AI company also plan to integrate 8080 Labs’ no-code technology with the AutoML, visualization, and dashboard features of its Lakehouse Platform, making it more accessible for both experts and citizen data scientists alike, Databricks said.

“We are thrilled to welcome 8080 Labs to the team as we accelerate the adoption and accessibility of lakehouse as the data architecture of the future,” said Ali Ghodsi (pictured), co-founder, and CEO of Databricks. “Together with last year’s acquisition of Redash, we are broadening the focus of our user base to a wider audience that prefers low-code/no-code solutions. Bringing simple capabilities to Databricks is a critical step in empowering more people within an organisation to easily analyze and explore large sets of data, regardless of expertise.”

The acquisition of 8080 Labs combined with Databricks’ ‘glass box’ approach to AutoML, also empowers people to perform comprehensive data tasks with ease, from data analysis and data transformation to machine learning workflows, Databricks claims.

The platform automatically generates high-quality code behind the scenes, allowing data teams to input their findings and results without requiring expert engineers to reimplement the process for production.

The San Francisco-based startup recently raised a $1.6bn (£1.17bn) round of funding from investors to accelerate the global adoption and development of its Lakehouse Platform.
