Deutsche Telekom Global Carrier, the international wholesale unit of Deutsche Telekom, claims to be the first network provider in Europe to offer 800Gbps data transmission to service providers and enterprises.
The company has turned on an 800G network connecting its data centres in Vienna, Austria, using optical networking technology from Ciena. Deutsche Telekom Global Carrier is using Ciena’s WaveLogic 5 Extreme (WL5e) system to “satisfy surging traffic requirements” across its pan-European network, it said. The network will be used to address demand for higher speeds and efficiency covering applications around cloud computing, the Internet of Things and video, the company added.
The technology is based on higher spectrum efficiency and will allow Deutsche Telekom to transport eight portions of 100G data traffic in less than 100Ghz of spectrum, and is optimised for high-capacity 100GE (Gigabit Ethernet) and 400GE customer interface connectivity. It is the first solution that can transport 2 x 400GE across a single 800G wavelength, it says.
Rolf Nafziger, senior vice president at Deutsche Telekom Global Carrier, said: “This will help us achieve a significant industry milestone by delivering the first 800G network in Europe. With it, we will increase network capacity and efficiency and create a more adaptive network that can meet our customers' needs now and into the future.”
Jamie Jefferies, vice president and general manager for EMEA at Ciena, said: “The telecoms sector in EMEA is among the most competitive in the world, so it is essential that telcos continually offer newer, faster and more reliable services to stand out from their competitors.”
Deutsche Telekom Global Carrier offers voice and mobile services, internet and content services, connectivity from service providers to their customers and in-flight broadband connections to airlines.
