Laptop manufacturer Lenovo has announced plans to recruit 12,000 R&D professionals to its roster over the next three years as part of its effort to double investment in R&D.
The new hires will add to the around 5,000 recruits already brought into the company during the FY21/22 fiscal year to support research across the new IT architecture of ‘Client-Edge-Cloud-Network-Intelligence’, the firm said.
The recruitment drive is part of the firm’s transformation strategy to transition from a devices company to a global technology powerhouse that also includes services and solutions, according to chairman and CEO, Yuanqing Yang (pictured).
“My vision for Lenovo’s innovation is to become one of the world’s leading ICT companies, a pioneer and enabler of intelligent transformation,” Yang said. “Our intention is to optimise between technology with quick market returns and foundational research, and continuous improvement and breakthrough innovation.”
The firm said its R&D team will focus on new products and business models, incubating technologies from edge computing to technology that can help businesses capitalise on the metaverse, as well as emerging and disruptive innovations like next-generation AI and heterogeneous computing.
Alongside its R&D commitments, the firm outlined its vision to become net-zero by 2050 and is working with the Science-Based Target Initiative to establish goals that support this vision.
The company claims it exceeded its 2020 emission reduction goals a year ahead of schedule and has already established science-based targets for 2030.
