Sophos buys Dutch security specialist

Threat detection and response specialist bought for endpoint protection

Sophos has announced it acquired a Dutch specialist in advanced threat prevention SurfRight for a total cash consideration of $31.8m. Based in Hengelo, the Netherlands, SurfRight offers a portfolio of technologies that prevent and detect the sophisticated attacks by interrupting malware. It is also a specialist in signature-less next-generation endpoint threat detection and response (ETDR) and anti-espionage technology as well as protection against ransomware attacks.

According to Sophos, the acquisition will enhance its position in the field of endpoint protection technology, by adding new defence tactics, either on premise or in the cloud. The technology delivered by SurfRight is expected to further strengthen the Sophos’ security strategy by helping to reduce time needed to detect and address security incidents.

Following the acquisition, all the technologies will be immediately integrated into Sophos’ endpoint security solutions portfolio and become available via its global network of over 15,000 channel partners, it says.

Also, under the terms of the deal, Sophos will retain all SurfRight employees and the company’s office in Hengelo and, additionally, the CEO Mark Loman will join the Sopohos Enduser Security Group, reporting to Dan Schiappa.

“SurfRight is a growing, profitable business with an established customer base and proven security capabilities. The team has engineered powerful, innovative next generation endpoint technologies that provide multiple advanced protection ad mitigation elements, and yet are simple to use. We are excited to welcome SurfRight to Sophos and look forward to introducing the benefits of the leading-edge technology to our global customer and partner base,” says Kris Hagerman, CEO at Sophos.

“Sophos offers SurfRight the opportunity to be part of a high-growth industry leader with a world-class channel and specialised product development teams to accelerate the delivery of our technology into IT organisations of all sizes. We build this new technology from the ground up to address every vector of an APT attack in an auto-responding, coordinated manner, thus enhancing the speed of detection and response.
