Telefónica rises to the quantum security services challenge with new unit

Telefónica has announced the creation of a centre of excellence dedicated to quantum technologies, which will include developing quantum services to be provided by its Telefónica Tech unit.

The centre of excellence will cover the three main areas of quantum: communications and cybersecurity, computing and simulation, and sensors and metrology.

Essentially, Telefónica aims to take advantage of the opportunities arising from quantum computing, to strengthen the protection of the company’s networks and systems, as well as those of its customers, identifying the most appropriate tools and processes to reinforce their security, and neutralise risks through its services.

To this end, the company has begun to adopt a “cryptographic agility approach” in its strategy, based on enabling its systems with the necessary mechanisms to react quickly to cryptographic threats, protect keys, certificates and data, and face a future of potential quantum insecurity.

Enrique Blanco, global CTIO of Telefónica, said: “We have always been aware that telecommunications networks are key to the functioning of the societies we serve, so it is our purpose to evolve our infrastructures to meet new demands.”

Addressing other key technology areas, Telefónica Tech recently signed a collaboration agreement with IBM, to drive the deployment of artificial intelligence, analytics and data governance solutions across enterprises.

The agreement establishes a framework of collaboration between the two companies, to help joint customers deal with the complexity of managing new technologies and extract the full value from them in their business processes.

The companies are working together on the development and deployment of an open, hybrid and multi-cloud platform, specialising in data management and AI, including use cases, implementation resources, training, and certifications.
