The UK is more security-conscious than any other country, new research from VBQ Speakers reveals.
According to the search data across more than 138 countries, 'password generator' terms were searched for on Google over 157,000 times each month in the UK, more than the Singapore (2.190), the Netherlands (2.123) and New Zealand (1.491).
VBQ Speakers examined how many people over the past 12 months searched on Google for a password generator, a tool that creates unique, strong passwords to protect accounts.
Despite 72% of people admitting recycling passwords for several of their accounts, specific terms that appeared most within the research were ‘strong password generator’, ‘random password generator’, ‘online password generator’ and ‘Google password generator’.
"Using a password generator is a great first step for someone to take in protecting themselves online, and it's interesting to see from our research that the UK has searched for them most regularly over the past 12 months," said VBQ Speakers founder & director, Leo von Bülow-Quirk.
VBQ Speakers pointed to a 2016 report by Cybersecurity Ventures, which predicted that global damages incurred as a result of cybercrime would cost an estimated $10.5tn on an annual basis by 2025.
Despite the rising frequency and increased costs of global cyberattacks, Bülow-Quirk added: “It is therefore critical for us to take cyber security seriously and protect ourselves both as individuals and businesses."
