Research from Trend Micro indicates that end user organisations are struggling to keep their IT security infrastructure up to date. In a survey of over 2,300 IT security professionals from around the globe, 51% of respondents admitted to having security infrastructure that was no longer in use, due to a variety of reasons from a lack of integration, absence of necessary skills and outdated equipment.
According to the security vendor, the state of internal disarray around security presents a major opportunity for managed service providers (MSPs).
“It’s clear from this research that IT security leaders have historically struggled to maximise their ROI from previous investments. This could be putting their organisation at risk from cyber threats and placing extra pressure on SecOps teams,” said James Munroe, head of UK channel, Trend Micro.
“By explaining the benefits of SaaS platforms to their customers and leveraging MSP programmes, channel partners have a fantastic opportunity to ensure the next investments IT security buyers make will optimise protection, free-up resources and add value,” he added.
The survey indicated that 51% of respondents felt their team was being overwhelmed by the volume of alerts, and 55% admitted they were not confident in their ability to prioritise and respond to alerts. According to Trend Micro, on average, 27% of analysts’ time was spent chasing false positives.
The chaotic situation threatens to undermine wellbeing, job satisfaction and productivity of SOC teams. Approximately 70% of respondents said they were emotionally impacted by their job outside of the office, and many admitted that alert overload forces them to either turn off, or even ignore alerts and hope that colleagues step in to help.
