Field Effect: disparate security solutions aren’t fixing today’s cyber issues

The disparate collection of security solutions offered by MSPs to end-users aren't solving today’s security issues, leading to more complexity in the market, especially for MSPs, according to cybersecurity company Field Effect.

“A lot of them give you a sense of security but are they actually solving the problem? Not always,” said Andrew Hunter (pictured), senior cyber security advisor at Field-Effect during a keynote address at a CRN webinar yesterday. “The more complex a solution is, the more opportunities for gaps and opportunities for vulnerabilities to go unnoticed.”

Whenever an MSP or a customer deploys several different security solutions, and they still don’t feel secure, Hunter said it’s further evidence that they haven’t resolved the issue.

“They are not meant to work together,” added Hunter. “You’ve now got 10 different systems giving you alert fatigue, and you end up stopping paying attention to at least half of your systems. It’s just an opportunity for an attacker to come in and be unnoticed by the deployed system.”

Hunter emphasises that complexity is the enemy of security, and the answer must be a move towards simplicity and making sense of today’s complex world of cybersecurity.

As businesses shift to remote work, the reality is that MSPs are struggling to come to terms with what kind of premium service to offer customers while also considering how to build in-house expertise, which is challenging, says Toby Nangle, channel partnerships lead at Field Effect.

“It is hard to find cybersecurity experts; they are expensive and hard to attract, so all of this adds to the complexity,” added Nangle. “MSPs are adopting tools in a way that is driving complexity into their OPs, squeezes margins and pulls heavily on their resources.”
