CensorNet makes acquisition, targets service providers

Acquisition will accelerate company’s global expansion and seize the market opportunity for a unified cloud security offering

UK-based CensorNet has bought Danish multi-factor authentication vendor SMS PASSCODE in a closed deal. CensorNet will integrate SMS PASSCODE’s adaptive multi-factor authentication technology into its cloud-based Unified Security Solution, which brings together email and web security.

“This gives us the full range of security solutions,” CensorNet CEO Ed Macnair tells IT Europa. The fast-growing security business and its channels need to offer comprehensive tools, especially covering the area of applications, he says. “Most organisations have no idea what applications are being used and hwo their data is being accessed. A multi-faceted security solution to see all -email, web and apps is what is required.”

He criticises the use of Symantec and Websense where users are “flying blind” and cannot see what the apps are doing. However, he admits there is much that vendors can do to encourage channels to not “sell by fear” which risks stultifying the client into inaction. “Vendors are responsible for educating the market,” he says. “It should not be a scary message”.

He points to success in channels who understand this, and is finding his message resonates with them. He is also looking to service providers, who he thinks will be a large part of his business going forward, and supported by the latest acquisition, the European market and SMB sector where he wants to offer enterprise grade tools to the market. For MSPs and others, CensorNet offers a white box solution that can be packaged as part of a wider offering.

“The way to stay relevant is to become a managed security advisor and we've seen quite a few resellers skilling up and making it possible to everyone to digest and understand the security message.”

“We have seen 100% a year growth in Benelux, strong Nordic sales and Germany up 70%.” CIOs everywhere under immense pressure to simultaneously encourage productivity and protect sensitive data, he says. “Our vision is to provide organisations with a single pane of glass that gives them visibility and control of web, cloud applications and email. With weak or stolen passwords still being the major source of network breaches integrating SMS PASSCODE’s authentication capability to our solution was a no brainer.”
