Tape storage vendor Fujifilm is planning to release a 'Lite' version of its mobile Kangaroo system for “cold” and archive data, and is looking for new partners to push the product.
The Kangaroo Lite is aimed at SMBs or branch offices, and can store up to 100TB of data. It costs under €100,000. The original full fat version, aimed at larger organisations and launched last year, contains 120 LTO tapes, and can store up to 1PB of data. That one has a list price of up to €350,000.
Both versions come in a wheeled box (pictured), equipped with an integrated mouse and screen, UPS power and Fujifilm’s object archiving software.
Speaking at last week's IT Press Tour in Rome, Peter Struik, executive vice president at Fujifilm Europe, said Kangaroo Lite would be roaming in the wild in "July or August" this year. He said the company is on the search for both technology and channel partners to help sell the nimbler Kangaroos.
The Kangaroo is mainly designed to be used offline, to help look after the 70% of business data Fujifilm says is "cold", and which is not immediately needed for business operations.
