Bristol-based chip company Graphcore has been acquired by Japanese conglomerate SoftBank to accelerate its AI push.
Specialising in AI-focused intelligent processing units, Graphcore will become a wholly owned subsidiary while retaining its original branding.
“This is a tremendous endorsement of our team and their ability to build truly transformative AI technologies at scale, as well as a great outcome for our company,” said Graphcore co-founder and CEO Nigel Toon.
“In SoftBank, we have a partner that can enable the Graphcore team to redefine the landscape for AI technology.”
The company will continue operating from its Bristol headquarters, with offices in Cambridge, London, Gdansk, and Hsinchu.
